The Heart of Scottsville is a newly formed organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Scottsville Downtown Distict.  The Heart of Scottsville effort began in the Spring of 1995 when the Scottsville-Allen County Chamber of Commerce retained the services of a local landscape architectural firm to develop a master plan for one street adjacent to the Public Square.  Recognizing a greater need, the project immediately expanded to encompass the Public Square itself and one block down each of the four streets approaching and intersecting at the square.  The master plan was completed and presented at the end of the summer of 1995 and received enthusiastic support from both the City and County.

Since that time, the concept has grown from a master plan to implementation through the dedicated efforts of the City and Heart of Scottsville Committee, which was appointed by the City and included County representation.  In this implementation phase, the Committee has secured TEA-21 Transportation Enhancement Funds from the Kentucky Highway Department that is being used to reconstruct the sidewalks, downtown parking lots and streetscape.  Drawings of the concept plan can be viewed by following the Quad Plan link.  Photos of the work in progress show the demolition and new work completed.

As part of the streetscape, and as a means to generate funds that will be used to continue this effort, the Heart of Scottsville Committee is selling engraved brick pavers to be permanently embedded in the new streetscape. Applications are available by calling City Hall at (270)237-3238 or by the e-mail link below.

Facade Improvements to the Carpenter-Dent building have been completed.  (See news story page for previous article) The changes to the buildings exterior have been dramatic and clearly show what can be done by willing property owners to improve their properties.  While the installation of second story windows to replace wood covers was thought to be the most dramatic change, the Meadors have gone even further by removing the old metal awning, installing new wall details, installing new doors and side lights and replacing aniquated signage with new window and wall signage to resemble past advertisement.

City’s First Facade Grant Project Completed

Notice the similarity between the current view and the 1930’s post card. The cornice at the top of the building has been reconstructed. The porch detail has been recaptured and the signage has been reconstructed.

This effort by the Meadors is to be commended. A National Register of Historic Place plaque will be present to the Meadors in the near future as an expression of appreciation for their work and dedication to the restoration of Heart of Scottsville.
